On the Valley Line Today - Steam Powered Freight!

The Valley Railroad is adding some ballast to its line - and it's coming by rail. Whenever hoppers full of rock show up at the wye in Old Saybrook, they of course need to be picked up and taken up the line. All summer, this job has been done by one of the railroad's vintage center-cab diesels.

Today, that job went to the VRR's (actually) newest locomotive, J-1a #3025.
